Peace in the Middle of the Puzzle

I'm in the middle of a puzzle right now, however I'm not the one putting the pieces together. I'm leaving it up to the One who created the puzzle, who knows exactly where each piece belongs and who can see the picture on the box. Sometimes my head can get in the way of my heart, which says to let go and trust the One who hung each star in the heavens and even cares for the little birds. He knows the big picture; I do not. His plan for my life is so much bigger than I can ever imagine. I don't want to settle for less. So for now I will keep trusting and wait for HIS answers in HIS timing. I will rest in His love for me. I will pray for peace that passes understanding. I will rejoice and be thankful for TODAY. I will "let go" and "let God" continue to work the masterpiece He is creating in my life. For HIS glory and honor. Amen.

Oh Happy Day!!!

I have the morning to myself!!! The toilets are clean...the counters are scrubbed...the floors are mopped....I LOVE a clean house!!! J.D. and Colby are at the Home Church for "Mom's Morning Out". They get to play with their friends and work on some schoolwork with the help of tutors there and I get to have 3 hours to myself (with Brady) on Friday mornings! I'M SO EXCITED!!! Brady fell asleep on the way home from dropping them off and he's been out for 2 hours now. As a homeschooling mom, USUALLY when I have time to myself it's when I'm at the gym or the store. I'm sure the boys and I will have a great afternoon now that we've had some quality time apart! :)

I found this poem and just had to share:

To a Homeschool Mom
By Amelia Harper

He gave this gift with gentle hands,
A treasure rich and rare;
But sand and rock and rugged stone
Obscured the gem so fair.

“I give this gift to you,” He said,
“To polish and to prime;
The future lies within your hands,
So make use of the time.”

Some others placed their precious gifts
Within another’s care,
Because they knew the craft took time—
And time they could not spare.

But you were not content to trust
This task to other hands.
You sought to teach yourself the craft
That such a task demands.

For, you said, “No other hand
Can craft this gem so fair;
My loving eyes can better see
The treasure hidden there.”

So carefully you chipped away
Till brilliance sprang from stone.
You shaped each facet, smoothed each face,
Until the task was done.

Some days you feared that you would fail;
Some days, you saw success.
But still you labored on with love
And gentle tenderness.

Thus, soon the gem He gave to you
Reflected Light sublime;
And then you knew no other task
Was better worth your time.

2010 - A Year of BLISS

Another year has come and gone. A brand new year is right around the corner....full of anticipation and excitement for what is to come. I love the opportunity to reflect on the past year and set goals for the coming year.

2010 was a wonderful year for our family because we welcomed another SWEET baby boy into our family. Brady has been such a JOY and we are so thankful that God entrusted him to us!

Last Day of "Work"!!!

So tonight (Thursday, July 1st) was my last day of working at Trader Joe's until November or December (I hope!)....I am officially on maternity leave! Now the real "work" can begin! :) Only 14 days until my due date! Top of my to-do list tomorrow is getting the car seat washed and installed in the car so we're ready whenever this baby decides to make his entrance into the world.

I had a sonogram and ob appointment yesterday. The baby is 9 lbs according to the measurements from the ultrasound. If I go to my due date, we'll be looking at a 10+ lb baby! AND this baby is transverse which means he is SIDEWAYS! No wonder I'm so uncomfortable! The doctor said he will either turn head down (like he's supposed to) or else turn into a breech position. So we're praying that he will turn his head down soon and then we can figure out from there whether I'm having a c-section or not. Another sonogram and ob appointment are scheduled for next week, so we'll just wait and see what happens!!!

My grandpa

Grandpa & Kiley - 1980
Grandpa & Kiley - 1997

Today at lunchtime, the boys noticed a picture of my grandpa Esra on the fridge and started asking me questions about him. They asked me what he was like and what were his favorite things to do. I'll never be able to fully describe him in simple words....you just had to know him. I wish they would've had the opportunity to know him because they would've loved him and grandpa would've loved them so much too.

I told the boys that he was one of the funniest people I've ever known and he loved to ride his bicycle backwards and eat red licorice. Then J.D. asked me "Will he still be funny and ride his bike backwards and eat red licorice in heaven?" With my eyes welling up with tears, all I could do was nod my head and smile. I'm so glad we'll see him again someday!

Zoo Zoom Kid's Fun Run

The boys participated in their first official run today! It was the Sacramento Zoo's Zoo Zoom Kids Runs. J.D. has been asking for weeks, "How many days until my 1/2 marathon?" Ever since Mike & I ran a 1/2 marathon last October & then Mike did another one last month, J.D.'s been begging to do one. It wasn't quite a 1/2 marathon that he did today, but I'm sure he'll work up to one eventually! Colby's age group ran 220 yards & J.D.'s age group ran a 1/2 mile. They got their shirts & bibs early this morning in front of the zoo entrance. All the kids had the number "1" on their bib! Then we had to wait for the 5K & 10K runs to finish. It was fun watching the first runners of the 10K run the final stretch to the finish line....they were so fast! Colby's group went first & Mike did the run with him. J.D. was in the third group & Mike also ran with him.....although J.D. left him in the dust when he got close to the finish line! The boys got medals at the finish line & were pretty excited! Unfortunately we didn't get to go to the zoo afterwards like we had planned. The weather was just too bad today. Thankfully the rain & strong winds started right after the last run finished, so we were able to stay dry! We'll just have to plan a trip to the Sacramento Zoo another day!

J.D. lost ANOTHER tooth!

Last week, J.D. lost his 2nd tooth! He lost his first two teeth less than a month apart! No others are loose yet.....maybe these two teeth will have a chance to grow in before he loses any more! :)

The best day ever of my WHOLE life!

J.D. excitedly proclaimed tonight that today was "the best day ever of my whole life!" It was his 7th birthday today and we tried to fill it with lots of fun and his favorite things. He went to his homeschooling co-op class this morning with cookies and milk to share for his birthday. It was also his turn for show and tell, so he brought the tooth he lost last week and told everyone the story of how he lost his first tooth. After that was a special picnic lunch at the park and playing basketball with Daddy. Then they watched a movie this afternoon (so Mommy could take a nap!). This evening we went to the library, Toys R Us and then Chuck E Cheese's until 9pm! What a day! He just yelled from his bed a few minutes ago (at 11pm) that he's still not tired! Hopefully we can all sleep in tomorrow! :)

Mike's 2nd 1/2 Marathon!

Mike finished his second 1/2 marathon this morning!!! He had to do this one without me since I'm pregnant this time! :) The boys had been praying for Mike to get 1st place. Although he didn't get 1st place (he wasn't trying to!), he FINISHED and we are so proud of him!!

J.D. lost his first tooth!

A couple of weeks ago while we were eating dinner, J.D. was having trouble chewing his pizza and told us "It's my tooth!" Sure enough, one of his bottom front teeth was a little loose! It bothered him for a few days and then not much more was said about it. Last Wednesday I asked him if he was going to be 6 or 7 when he lost his first tooth since his birthday is Monday. By Thursday, the tooth was barely hanging on so Mike got it out really easily. J.D. was so excited! He got a special tooth pillow from Grammie and put it under his pillow. The tooth fairy left him a note and some money. The boys know the tooth fairy is just pretend and it was so funny hearing them talk the next morning about who they think the tooth fairy is. Colby is sure the tooth fairy is Jill, their 14 year old cousin! J.D.'s new tooth is already coming in! He's going to look so different!

IT'S A BOY!!!

We found out last month that we will be adding another BOY to our family this summer! The baby showed us VERY clearly that he's a boy....so there won't be any surprises! :) The boys thought they were going to have a sister, but now they are so excited they are going to have a little brother! I thought it was going to be a girl, too, I think mostly because everyone kept telling me "You're going to have a girl this time!" But after we found out the baby is a boy, it was actually a huge relief to me because it means so much less work! We were going to have to turn the play room into a nursery if the baby was a girl, but since it's a boy, we're just going to have all three boys share a room and we can keep the play room just like it is! And we are much better prepared for a boy, since we already have two! I kept all their clothes and shoes (at least the ones that weren't completely worn out!), so we have most everything we need for another boy. We only have 18 weeks to go.....it's going by fast! Here are a few pictures of our newest family member....

Here's our proof! :)

Picture of his face....you can see his eye sockets, nose, mouth on the left and a foot on the right
The boys are helping us out with baby names (even though I already have a name picked out for the baby). J.D. wants to name him "Tyrannosaurus Fire Bliss" and Colby's choice is "Ornithomimus Poot Bliss". Can you tell they're really into dinosaurs right now?!? :)

WHY do I homeschool???

I've been thinking about this question a lot. Since deciding to homeschool almost 2 years ago, not a day has gone by that I haven't asked myself this question.....sometimes because of positive reasons, other times, not so much. Sometimes the question is asked to me by friends or family and the answer can vary depending who I'm talking with (or what mood I'm in at the time!). I decided to write this post to help me put into words some of the things in my head and in my heart. I am in no way writing this to convince others to homeschool; nor am I writing this to defend my choice to homeschool. This is more of an opportunity for me to reflect on the question and express some of my reasons (the list keeps getting longer and longer) for homeschooling. Most importantly to me, when I have one of "those days" where I don't think I can do it any more, I can read this post again and hopefully have a renewed vision and desire to homeschool my children.

Homeschooling was one of those things I said "I would NEVER do!" Sometimes God has a different plan for our life than we do. I firmly believe that God led us to homeschool, and since I want to follow His will for my life, I will strive daily to lay down my plans and desires and follow His plan for my life. This is hard some days when things aren't going so well and I start thinking about how the boys could be in school and I could have time to myself!! I hardly even know what that is anymore! More time to clean the house, read, go to the store by myself, maybe even get a nap in (something that I'm just not getting this pregnancy!).....I could go on and on! However, when I stop to think about it, God gave me these precious children for only a short time and He wants me to "train them in the way they should go, so when they are old they will not turn from it." (Prov. 22:6) When I think of it in that way, I realize what a privilege I have been given to nurture and care for and teach these gifts from God! I believe we are creating a very close and special bond with our children that just could not be the same if they were spending their days away at school. The boys are also forming such a unique and close bond with each other that they would not have if they were away from each other at school. Sure, sometimes it is tough and they argue or get frustrated with one another, but what siblings don’t?! I actually think they get along better than most siblings because they do spend so much time together. It is my responsibility to recognize when they need a little break from each other and accommodate during those times. We are trying to make a habit of having special one on one outings with the boys, so they can have either mom or dad’s undivided attention for awhile, as well as some healthy time apart. Each day the boys are getting to learn new things together and teach each other, too. It warms my heart to see the delight on their faces when they learn something new….especially if it was their brother who taught it to them!

The boys are in a variety of activities, most of which they would not be able to participate in if they were in school. I love that they are able to experience classes with children of different ages and groups of various sizes. While the classes in public school are getting ridiculously huge thanks to a lack of funding, my children can still enjoy classes with fewer children and receive more attention and time from the instructor. I am able to choose what they are participating in and find things that they are interested in that work around our schedule. If the boys were in school all day, I would not want them involved in many classes or sports because that would be even more time they are away from home. Now I know that sounds maybe a bit controlling or like I’m trying to smother and overprotect my kids, but that is not the case at all. I want to spend as much time with them while they are young, instilling our values and providing a nurturing, godly environment for them so that they have a strong foundation on which to build their lives. How can I do that if they are away all day?

I realize there are great teachers out there in public and private schools who are willing to go above and beyond for their students, but who loves your children more than you? Who cares about their education more than you? Who cares about their future more than you? No one, I hope, except God! Some people think parents without a teaching credential are unqualified to teach their children. I used to be one of them! However after having children of my own and teaching them at home, I see that no one could know their individual needs and learning styles more than me. Even if a teacher cared that much, there is no way any teacher could take the time to get to know my child like I do. Class sizes are soaring in public schools, teachers are frustrated (for good reasons!) and political agendas and selfishness are being put ahead of the best interests of the children. No matter your political stance or views, it cannot be denied that the public school system is declining, at least for the time being.

My three biggest struggles with homeschooling are (1) finding the balance in guarding my children from poor influences, yet not smothering or “overprotecting” them, (2) interruptions to our schedule and (3) making time to nurture myself spiritually, emotionally, mentally and physically. I have seen homeschooled children specifically (although this could apply to any child) that were sheltered too much and when they were old enough to be on their own, they rebelled and/or didn’t know how to deal with the “real” world. However, there are so many bad influences in our culture that, especially at a young age, I think it is vital to censor what your child is hearing and seeing. Finding that balance, which may even vary from child to child, can be difficult at times. Ultimately, they will grow up to make their own choices in life (whether we like them or not) and we have to have faith in the foundation that was built during their formative years and lots and lots of prayer for them!

Interruptions during the day are a part of life and each one needs to be weighed to determine if it is more important than the task at hand. A classroom teacher has a set schedule, just as I have a schedule as a homeschooling teacher. There can be so many distractions at home and it can be hard to stay on task at times. If the interruption can be turned into a “teachable moment”, then by all means, it is worth every second of it. If, however, it takes us off course, it can seem impossible at times to get back to what we were doing. In my second year of homeschooling, I’m still battling with trying to stick with what is planned, while allowing for some flexibility for positive interruptions.

Lastly, I so need to take care of my own heart, soul, mind and body. As a mom, I am always reminded of the airline stewardesses that remind the adults, in case of an emergency, to put their own oxygen masks on before putting on their child’s mask. I have to take the time to fill myself up, otherwise I have nothing to give to my children! Spiritually, I am in need of the word of God to fill my heart and a intimate relationship with my Savior, so I can stand firm and draw my strength from Him. How vital it is for my children to witness this relationship also! I need to daily ask for grace and wisdom and patience to make it through another day! It is so important for me to be striving to become a more godly woman, wife, mother and teacher. This is a lifelong process; a journey, not a destination. My vision for my family is that they will “love the Lord their God with all their heart, soul, strength, and mind” and “love their neighbor as themselves.” As Jesus said, everything rests on those two commands. In my difficult moments of homeschooling, and just life in general, my prayer is that I can stand back and remember the bigger picture of what God has planned. I also need to remember that God loves my husband and children even more than I do. My ultimate goal is to hear Him say to me, “Well done, my good and faithful servant.”

Happy New Year 2010!

Today's the first day of 2010! 2009 was a great year for our family. There were so many fun memories and blessings. One of the most special to me was celebrating 10 years of marriage to my wonderful husband! We celebrated the new year 10 years ago by coming home from our honeymoon!
I am really looking forward to see what God has in store for us this coming year. We are expecting a new addition to our family in July and are so excited for that blessing! (And very excited to find out next month if it is a he or she!) Have a wonderful and blessed 2010!

Catch-Up Time!

Guess I'm not so great at this blogging thing after all! So to quickly catch up, here are our family highlights from summer & fall 2009......

-We took a trip to Oregon and Washington in August. It was a great time with friends and family. The boys hiked to the top of Multnomah Falls which was one of my favorite parts of the trip, because that's where Mike proposed to me over 11 years ago. We were able to visit the Oregon Zoo in Portland and spent lots of time catching up with very special people in our life. Lots of great memories were made on that trip! Here's a picture of our family at the top of the falls....
-We started homeschool year #2 with a first grader and a preschooler! So far, so good! There's so much I'm loving about homeschooling and getting to spend time with the boys learning new things everyday! The boys did an amazing job on their Zimbabwe report (shown below) and J.D. gave an oral report in front of A LOT of people! I was so proud of him! J.D. loves math and anything having to do with space since he wants to be an astornaut. He also loves to write (if I'm not nagging him about capital and lowercase letters and proper punctuation!) and he's becoming quite the artist, too. Colby works diligently in his preschool and kindergarten workbooks and is already putting sounds together to read words. He loves learning about space also and we have some great materials on astronomy so the boys can have their fill of it this school year!
-Colby turned 4! Hard to believe my "baby" is already four years old. Of course he wanted a CARS party just like his brother had last March, complete with a race car pinata and Lightning McQueen cake!
-I turned the big 3-0 this year! And to celebrate this huge milestone, Mike and I ran a 1/2 marathon! There's nothing like getting up at 4am on your birthday to drive 45 minutes so you can stand in the cold and wait to run over 13 miles! A little crazy....I know! But it was great and I definitely want to do it again someday. Actually my next goal is to run a full marathon......maybe on my 35th?!
-Birthday Day #2 (yes, the very next day) we jumped out of an airplane for the fun of it.....with a parachute of course and a tandem jumper, too. Now THAT was one of the absolute FUNNEST things I've ever done......and I WILL be doing that again someday! :)
-Thanksgiving week at Santa Cruz......The boys and I went for NINE days of beautiful sunshine (one day with a little rain) at the beach. The days were spent playing on the beach and relaxing, watching gorgeous sunsets in the evening and then visiting around the campfire at night. The boys loved running from the waves and digging for sand crabs. It took over a week to get through all the laundry and there was sand everywhere, but it was so worth it!
-Mike celebrated his 35th birthday!!!!! No, I didn't take him skydiving, but I did surprise him because he thought I was working that night, but NO.....instead we went to dinner and the movies and ice cream and had a wonderful date night! So fun to have a night out while the boys are at Grandma & Grandpa's house!

-And last, but certainly not least, WE FOUND OUT WE'RE HAVING ANOTHER BABY!!!!! As if running a 1/2 marathon and skydiving weren't birthday present enough......I'm pregnant! :) But I'll be blogging more on this in the weeks and months to come........!!!

So there's the last several months in a nutshell. Now that I've sort of caught up, maybe I'll be more faithful in writing new ones. We'll see......

A Day in San Francisco - May 27th

I'm getting a bit behind in these blogs, but usually when we come home from some activity (like this one), I'm too tired to write about it! So this is from a few weeks ago, but I couldn't pass it up because we had such a great time. (And we took A LOT of pictures! Here are just a few.....)

We left our house at 5:15am to take Uncle Chad to the SF airport. We got there and dropped him off at 7:15 and the boys didn't even sleep on the way there! Then we had a few hours before the Exploratorium opened, so we made our way up Highway 101 and went down Lombard Street and then on to the Coit Tower. The boys had fun walking around and we got some excercise going up and down several stairways near the tower. Then we headed over to Pier 39 and enjoyed some delicious pancakes at the Eagle Cafe. The boys said they were even better than MY pancakes! :) The cafe had paper tablecloths and crayons so the boys busied themselves with drawing masterpieces on our table!

Our next stop was the Exploratorium where we spent most of the day. The boys (and Mike & I!) had SO much fun trying out all the experiments and exhibits. Before we knew it, the afternoon had come and we were getting hungry! We left for about an hour to grab a bite to eat and then went back and stayed until closing. I think we could've easily spent a few more hours there! Then we went outside and walked around the lake and the boys chased pigeons. :)

We drove through the Presidio and then went to Lombard Street again and drove down the curvy road another two times. Then the boys got out and walked down part of it. We made our way back to 101 and the San Mateo Bridge to head for home around 8pm. It was such a long day, but so much fun. We might just have to take a trip there again soon!

Boys' First Fishing Trip 5-12-2009

The boys went on a "guys only" fishing trip with Daddy, Papa and Uncle Chad at Hogan. According to Mike, the boys had a great time and can't wait to go again!

Thursday, April 9, 2009

I had to write this, because it hasn't happened in a long time and probably won't again for a long time. There was an unusual amount of crying this afternoon and I figured it was due to the lack of sleep since our trip last weekend. So for the sake of my sanity, I spontaneously declared it was "quiet time" and the boys needed to get in their beds before I counted to ten. They looked at me somewhat startled (for the record, I said it kindly and did not lose my cool), but they quickly obliged. I told them I would be back in 15 minutes, but wasn't sure it would even last that long. The boys have bunk beds, so I figured this was going to be a disaster. Much to my surprise however, I heard NOTHING (which yes, can sometimes be a bad thing, but not in this case fortunately!). I went to the couch and started reading a book I've been trying to finish and was amazed that I could hear the second hand on every single clock in the house ticking away. I can't even remember the last time that happened! There was complete silence in my house (except for the clocks). I got up to check on them (about 18 minutes later....oops!), only to find Colby fast asleep and J.D. laying quiet with his eyes closed. In all honesty, I think he was praying. When he heard me come in, he said "Mommy, I feel so much better now!" And so did I!

Fun at Tahoe

We finally made it to the snow this year! The boys have been asking to go since December, so I was glad that it worked out before the snow melted. We first visited Cabela's in Reno which the boys just loved. It was their second visit there, but they were still in awe of all the animals. Then we headed to Uncle Bill's cabin in Tahoma & spent the next couple of days there, just relaxing & playing in the snow. We took some long walks, bike rides & enjoyed our quiet time together as a family, away from the everyday "busy-ness" of life.
